ModAid 20 - OUT NOW!!!!!

Over the years Small World have tinkered with many variations of guitars and amplifiers to re-produce that raw sound. John has used many guitars, but always returns to trusty Gibsons and Rickenbackers.

Gibsons have varied in models, Les Pauls of many flavours; Customs, Limited Editions etc, also a semi-acoustic 335 and a couple of SG Juniors (a bit of a girls guitar this though).

Rickenbackers also play a big part, with 330's, 620, 350V63 and twelve string models having been purchased over the years.

John also ventured into the Fender zone with a Telecaster and a Stratocaster.

The more obscure guitars have included an Overwater and a silver Kawaj (yuk).

Marshall have also played a big part along with Vox AC30's. John has always preferred a valve amplifier to get that warmer, edgey sound. The odd Gallen Kruger and Mesa Boogie have featured but not lasted long. Recently Orange have come to the forefront. These garish coloured boxes are used for health and safety reasons, there bright orange colouring enabling John to be able to see them more easier on stage.

John now uses Marshall handwired series 1974X Combo & 1974CX Extension Cabinet. Very retro, very good!

Effects boxes of various size and colour have helped push that volume level to 11. Boutique pedals have began to make an appearance on the pedal board, more details soon.

Mick has just acquired a Rickenbacker 4001 to accompany his Musicman Stingray and Hartke stack.

Paul has some orange coloured drums (he says that they're classic gold) and Chris has a tamborine! (That's definitely red)

Here are some pictures of the guitar gear that John has used to bash out those Small World sounds.

Two Marshall Jubilee 2554 1x12 combos and one Marshall Jubilee 2558 2x12 combo (all valve of course)
Rickenbacker 620, Gibson Les Paul Standard
Rickenbacker 330 (once owned by Weller)

John bought this Rickenbacker 330 guitar from Paul Weller of The Jam, during the recording of their Sound Affects album. You can just make out the words "I AM NOBODY" carved into the top horn of the guitar's body. This guitar features on many Jam posters and there's a good picture of Weller playing it in the booklet that comes with the Jam box-set.

Here's a picture of John (aged 15!!) buying the guitar from Weller at the Townhouse.
Some more pics from the day.tthe top picture shows John playing Weller's famous "WHAAM" guitar - it's the one he played in the video for "Start!"
